| This is the world famous mountain bike ride at Lake Tahoe. A ride that even a Beginner-Intermediate Mountain Bike rider can do. There are several variations that you can do on this ride as well. The first one that will be covered is the easy one and the second one takes a little more time and involves a little more climbing. | ||

| Beginner-Intermediate Ride | Intermediate-Advanced Ride |
The most popular way that beginner and intermediate riders like
to do the ride is with two cars.
One car is parked at the start and the other is at the end of the ride.
This saves alot of climbing!

After you drop off a car at the Ponderosa take the second car up to
Spooner lake park. To get there drive south on Highway 28 away from Incline
Village. Take a left at Spooner Park and park there. At the gate of Spooner
Park you may want to pick up a free map there.
Before heading out be sure to fill two bike bottles as there is no water on the trail, except for a creek at the Red House Dam. If you need to fill your bottles here then take a filter or iodine or maybe that is iodide, but don't take the wrong ones! |
| Once on your bike take the trail that goes to the east.
This trail will take you down to Spooner Lake. Once at Spooner Lake there
will be a Y and you want to take the right, simply follow the signs. Now
you are at the start of the ride and the beginning of the climb.
|
|
| This road continues to climb for approximiatly 4 miles and follows the North Canyon Creak. At 3.9 miles into the ride there is a Forest Service road(15N04A), which leads up to Snow Peak. If you want a really strenuous climb this is for you! Snow Peak also affords incredible views of Lake Tahoe and the Carson Valley on the other side. Otherwise stay on the same road. Once you reach the summit you will go downhill for about a mile. |

At Marlette Lake take a left. Now follow the road along Marlette Lake
until it ends.
Now you are at the start of the Flume Trail. The riding is now on a
single track. There are a few sections on this ride that you may want to
carry your bike. These places are blatantly obvious. The next 4.5 miles
are on the single track of the Flume Ride. At the end of the Flume Trail
10.5 Miles stay to the left and take the Fire Road that leads down to the
Ponderosa Ranch. The Fire Road is a long and fun downhill. You are now
back at your car. This is the end of the Beginners ride.

| Variation #2 (Intermediate-Advanced) |

This entails taking a right at the end of the Flume Trail instead of going down to the Ponderosa Ranch. If you decide to do this variation the total distance will be 24 miles. Here you take the road to the right, which climbs up to the Red House part of the Flume Trail. |

There is another road which vears off to the left, but bear right, this takes you onto the Red House Flume Trail. This is another great section of singletrack, which follows along the ridge without any major technical challenges or altitude changes. |
The Red House Dam
Portage across the dam and continue on the trail(going right) climbing into the aspens. Here the Flume Trail changes into Forest Road 186. And then it changes into Forest Service Road 504 on the right. Do not go to the left or you will end up in Carson Valley, Nevada. If you find yourself doing anything other than climbing in the next mile and a half, then youre going the wrong way. This part of the trail takes you from open meadows back into the forest after 750' of climbing in a mile and a half. |

On the climb there is a fork in the road stay straight.
Once at the top you go back down to Marlette Lake.
|

At Marlette Lake make the climb back up the road and once at the top
there is 4.5 miles of fun sandy downhill ahead, but watch your speed during
busy periods.
At Spooner Lake turn and climb up the short trail to the Spooner Lake
parking lot for a total of 23 miles and 2600 feet of climbing.
